UNIZIK scandal: Embattled lecturer, Ekemezie, concocts lies against PUNCHman

Published by Samson Folarin

A senior lecturer at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Dr Peter Ekemezie, has threatened a PUNCHman, Samson Folarin, while refusing to respond to the series of allegations against him.

Ekemezie, in WhatsApp and text messages, concocted lies against our correspondent possibly to avert his sacking by the university.

Our correspondent had reported that the 46-year-old Ekemezie was employed as a Lecturer 1 Level 11 in the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, Faculty of Physical Sciences, UNIZIK, in July 2010.

There are controversies around his employment as he allegedly was supposed to be employed as Lecturer 2 Level 9.

However, the Mmiata-Anam Anambra State indigene became a subject of investigation after allegedly collecting money from one Mrs Uche Egolum, whom he reportedly promised to help with a special degree programme at the University of Port Harcourt.

After Egolum discovered that no such programme existed, she petitioned the UNIZIK management to help recoup her money and a committee was set up to investigate the allegation against Ekemezie.

The committee had, in the course of investigation, discovered that Ekemezie used an alleged forged BSc certificate to get the job at the university.

The Prof. Oliver Onyali-led committee in its report in 2015 asked the university to deal with the case using the institution’s rules and regulations.

What happened to the findings of the committee could not be ascertained.

Damning allegations of plagiarism were also made against Ekemezie by one Dr Chigozie Anarado and committees set up by the school indicted him.

However, the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, was alleged to have covered up the reports.

Ahaneku, who denied covering up the reports, said the plagiarism case had been referred to the university’s Senate, which planned to use anti-plagiarism software to determine the truth.
